One of Orange County’s landmarks is undergoing a much needed renovation! Originally built as a scoreboard for the Angel’s stadium in 1964 the “Big A” that now stands in the parking lot of the stadium is being renovated! Even if you are not an Angel’s or baseball fan, I’m sure you’ve seen the 230-foot tall, 210 ton “Big A” as you drive down the 57 freeway.
Some history of the “Big A”
The “Big A” was built in 1964 as a scoreboard for the stadium. It quickly became the icon of the stadium and it gave the stadium it’s unofficial nickname, “The Big A”. Often, you will hear Angel fans or broadcasters refer to the stadium as “The Big A.” Today, it serves as a marquee for upcoming events at the stadium. The halo that sits on the top of the “A” is illuminated after the game , but only if the Angels win. When there is a victory, you often hear the fans and broadcasters say, ” Light up the halo!”
What are the renovations?
After standing in out in the sun, rain, wind for 43 years the “Big A” was in much need of a new paint job. The ” A” wasn’t shiny and red, it was beginning to look pink! Therefore, the first thing that was done to the “Big A” was pressure wash it and re-paint it!
A few days ago, I also saw that the old scoreboard had been removed and they were adding some new lighting to it that uses less energy than the old bulbs they were using. I snatched this photos from a fan on a Angelswin.com forum:

After doing some research I also found out that the halo will have a new ring of lighting and lights will run down the sides of the “A”. Cool! It is still a mystery what other renovations will be added to the “Big A” but I will try to keep you up to date on them.
Why renovate now?
I believe that the original plan for the renovation of the “Big A” (and other renovations that are being done inside the stadium) is because the Angels are to host the 2010 All Star Game. People from all over the country will come to Anaheim for the All Star Game and we want to greet them with a big red shiny new “A” rather than the dull pink one we had previously. Also, with the post season coming into play within the next couple of weeks I am sure the “Big A” will play an important role in pride of the fans. It is said to be finished in November, but it all depends on the weather.
What do you think?
What are your thoughts on the renovation of the “Big A”. Do you have any pictures or updates on the renovation?
