VitaminTech: Contxts-SMS Business Cards

We at vitaminOC love tech-related stuff. We also love business cards. Put them together and you get Contxts. Contxts is currently a public alpha service that allows you to create and receive SMS business cards.

The service is pretty simple. You send a username to Contxts at 50500 and you receive a twitter-length message of 140 characters that the user chooses. The second way of doing it is by sending “send ‘recipient’s number’” to 50500. I chose to put my name, mobile, email, twitter, and a link to this blog on my Contxt profile.

Contxts is still in its alpha stages but it looks promising to me. It’s simple, easy to use, and can probably be used for more than sharing contact information. You can probably use it as an on-demand shortcode message service. Sorta receiving like a static twitter message. I don’t know. There are a lot of possibilities.

Though I still love the design and uniqueness of business cards, I wouldn’t mind getting a contxt from a person if they ran out of cards. You can try it out right now by txting “pct” to 50500.

For more information you can find contxts on twitter @contxts or visit their website at http://contxts.com/.

I’ve been using this service now for a couple weeks and I’m loving it!

Awesome. I wish there was a way to change your username, though I don’t want to lose my three-letter initials username, either.

That’s a very creative idea. I love it.

I don’t know how contxts works, are you only allowed to have one message available for your number? Could I set up different messages for my different classes? Also, you would have to change the message every day. I suppose that wouldn’t take much time, but you’d have to be careful not to forget. You could use Jott to text yourself a reminder or something.

Right now, yes it’s only 1 message per number. It is a very new site (so new that I got a three-letter ID with my initials), and still in its alpha testing stage.

I’m not sure if they will be opening it up to allow you to have more than one ID per account, but for now, you’d have to try to fit your entire message into 140 characters.

Also yes, you would have to change it every day… and knowing me, I’d forget :X

I’ve been using mine for campus campaign goodness and personal contact info, but I didn’t even consider the use of it for class updates!!
